President Greeting
Welcome to the website of the Athens Branch of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). Thank you for visiting.
Founded in the early twentieth century by the distinguished scholar Dr. Carter G. Woodson, ASALH is committed to the study, preservation, and dissemination of the history and culture of people of African descent.
The study of Black history is essential to understanding the full and complex story of humanity. Knowledge of the past not only deepens our collective understanding but also plays a critical role in challenging racial prejudice and promoting greater awareness, respect, and self-understanding.
An inclusive and honest understanding of history strengthens our communities and enriches our shared humanity. In this moment—when efforts in some spaces seek to minimize, obscure, or restrict access to our history and culture—the mission of ASALH is more important than ever. We invite you to visit our website often for updates and information about programs and activities.
Please consider donating and becoming a supporter of this vital work. We also encourage you, whether as an individual or as part of an organization, to become a member of ASALH. To join, visit https://athens-asalh.org/members/ (Membership – athens-asalh.org). National membership is required prior to joining a local branch.
The Athens Branch of ASALH is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and all contributions are tax-deductible.
On behalf of the Athens Branch of ASALH, and in solidarity with our national and international organization, I extend my very warm regards.
Fred O. Smith, Sr.
President, Athens Branch of ASALH
