“If a race has no history, if it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated.”

– Carter G Woodson

Who We Are

We are ATHENS-ASALH (pronounced ah-SAW-lah). We are a branch of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History that the historian Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson started in 1915.  Each year, we organize events and activities, often in partnership with other community groups and institutions, around an annual theme selected by the national organization. Our  members attend and participate in our monthly meetings and the national conference scheduled annually in October.

Our Goal

We promote the study of and education about African American history, life, and culture, both nationally and here in Athens. We sponsor community speakers at our monthly business meetings, and programming from film screenings to teach-ins to bus trips.  We sponsor three major programs annually: February – Black History Month; September—Founder’s Day; and December – Dr. Woodson’s Birthday.

Our History

This branch was chartered in  2018 to work with the national association.  We work to empower local communities and partner with organizations that are working to preserve the African American history of Athens, Georgia, and surrounding areas.  We have two sister branches in the state, located in Atlanta and Savannah.
